Undoubtedly not every person has the luxury of hitting the bed and snoozing right away. There are people who struggle to fall asleep, and when this becomes a regular occurrence, it can significantly affect someone’s quality of life. Causes of Insomnia
- Stress: One of the leading causes of lack of sleep is stress. It could be a work-related, relationship, or a personal issue that is keeping you awake. Find a healthy way of dealing with stress, including sharing what is disturbing you with a friend. Also try engaging in activities that lift your mood, and not focusing too much on what is stressing you. If you feel overwhelmed, talk to a therapist.
- Food: The food you eat will determine how well you will sleep. Avoid over stimulants such as coffee and other food items with caffeine. You should also keep off sugar, especially a few hours before going to bed, as sugar triggers brain activity and may cause hyperactivity.
- Bedding: What could be keeping you awake is how comfortable your bed is. If you are sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress or bed, you are likely to keep tossing and turning. To get better sleep, you should invest in comfortable bedding.
- Poor bedtime habits: Ideally, you should have a regular bedtime and time to wake up. If you stay up late through the night, you will end up having irregular sleeping times and may end up spending many nights wide awake because you overslept during the day. Get a timer to remind you that it is time to sleep, and put away all your gadgets so that you do not spend hours scrolling through your phone or computer.
- Medication: There is some medication such as antidepressants that will keep you awake. Before you start taking medication, talk with your doctor on some of the side effects of the medication. Avoid self-prescribed medication.
- Physical distractions: There could be some things that are interfering with your sleep. A noisy background, poorly lit room, staying with someone who continually distracts your sleep can be some of the reasons why you cannot seem to get the right amount of sleep.
