I am Michelle Knights, mum to Ellie. Ellie suffered with terrible colic for three months after she was born. Importing a Marpac 980A from the US saved my sanity. The gentle whirring sound immediately soothed her and she slept soundly, undisturbed by household and neighbourhood noise, and obviously greatly comforted by the womblike sound.

I was converted. When Ellie began to sleep in her nursery, I missed the peaceful atmosphere so much that I imported another machine - this time for my own bedroom. (The Marpac 980A also blocks out the noise of a certain someone snoring, but that's just between you and I.)

One question repeatedly presented itself to me - why did I have to import a white noise machine from the US? Surely other stressed out parents or anyone being kept awake by their neighbours in the UK and Europe could benefit from these tremendous little machines...
